Derek Marquis

Derek joined the Estuary Partnership Monitoring Team as a Research Technician during summer 2022 and was promoted to Research Scientist in fall 2023. Derek’s past academic work includes the development of shoreline management guidelines for private property owners in Burlington, Vermont. Originally from Salem, Massachusetts, he attended the University of Vermont and received a degree in Natural Resources Ecology with a minor in Physical Geography. The Lower Columbia Estuary Partnership is excited to welcome the Association of National Estuary Programs to our watershed and our headquarters. Staff and leaders from National Estuary Programs across the country are invited to gather for interactive workshops and field trips to learn about the work along the lower Columbia River, as well as within the Tillamook Estuaries Partnership study area. These workshops are being subsidized by the Association of National Estuary Programs so everyone can attend for a flat fee of $100. Thank you, ANEP! Registration closes October 17.

Paul Kolp

Paul joined the Estuary Partnership in 2010. He provides advanced technical support to the habitat restoration and monitoring programs. Paul provides modeling expertise to a range of projects and partners. He is leading restoration projects on the East Fork Lewis River in Washington. Paul was a senior scientist with HDR Engineering where he helped lead restoration efforts in the Pacific Northwest. Prior to that, he was the director of the Dayton Valley Conservation District. Paul also worked with Rivers Unlimited, Inc. to restore watersheds in Pennsylvania and New York. At the University of

Congressional staffers tour new project sites in the watershed above Steigerwald Lake National Wildlife Refuge

After the successful completion of the Steigerwald Reconnection Project, involving the natural reconnection of Gibbons Creek to its alluvial fan and the Columbia River, the Estuary Partnership is looking upstream for more ways to benefit water quality, reduce flood risk, and improve conditions for salmon, lamprey, and other species. Two projects, the Campen Creek Reconnection Project and the Washougal High School stormwater retrofit project, aim to do just that.
