State of the Estuary 2025 Chapter 3 released

Every five years, the Estuary Partnership releases a report documenting conditions along the lower Columbia River and estuary. Each report delves into five specific indicators to mark the status, trends, opportunities, and challenges facing the Columbia River: 

  • Habitat
  • Land Use
  • Imperiled Species
  • Water Quality
  • Connecting People with the Columbia

The first three chapters of the 2025 report, Connecting People to the Columbia, Imperiled Species, and Habitat, are available now. Additional chapters will be released in the coming months.

Derek Marquis

Derek joined the Estuary Partnership Monitoring Team as a Research Technician during summer 2022 and was promoted to Research Scientist in fall 2023. Derek’s past academic work includes the development of shoreline management guidelines for private property owners in Burlington, Vermont. Originally from Salem, Massachusetts, he attended the University of Vermont and received a degree in Natural Resources Ecology with a minor in Physical Geography. Katarina Lunde

Katarina joined the Estuary Partnership in 2025 as a Research Scientist, supporting the Ecosystem Monitoring Program and Action Effectiveness Monitoring Program. She has a background in plant ecology, with experience researching plant population ecology, biological invasions, and plant-insect interactions. Her past work includes assessing impacts of biological control agents on a native host plant in the Oregon Cascades and Coast Range. She has extensive experience with remote sensing and GIS data analysis, including using lidar, multispectral and hyperspectral imagery to classify tree species

Kari Dupler

Kari joined the Estuary Partnership as a Science Team member and will be implementing floodplain, wetland, and stream restoration projects. She is a Certified Professional Wetland Scientist and has managed all aspects of ecological restoration projects including design, permitting, and monitoring. Prior to joining the Estuary Partnership, Kari worked on wetland projects in Texas, Kentucky, and California and has extensive experience conducting vegetation surveys and mapping desert dry wash, riparian, and wetland habitats. She earned an M.S. in biology from Eastern Kentucky University and a B.S

East Fork Lewis River Reconnection Project enters final year of construction

Construction crews with Tapani Inc. are gearing up for the final year of restoration along the East Fork Lewis River. Crews began mobilizing during the week of April 20, focusing on preparing the job site for the return of heavy equipment and dewatering the four remaining abandoned gravel pits so they can be restored and reconnected to the East Fork Lewis River floodplain.
