"East of Washougal, WA and partly within the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, Steigerwald Lake National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) is 1,049 acres of wetlands, pastures, and woodlands along the Columbia River. When the second powerhouse at Bonneville Dam was constructed in the late 70s and early 80s, lowland habitat was lost both up and downstream. In 1987, a portion of these Refuge lands were established to reduce the impact of this loss and create more habitat for migrating and resident wildlife. Avoid southern portion of the island as current human impact is extensive and in need of clean-up. Moderate tidal influence (6ft or less). Environmental Notes: Follow Leave No Trace Guidelines. Multnomah Falls is the nation’s second highest year-round waterfall. Originating at an underground spring on Larch Mountain, Multnomah Creek cascades several miles through the forest before plunging 620 feet over the basalt cliff to dazzle over two million visitors per year. Multnomah Falls actually consists of two separate drops. The top falls measures 542 feet, and the bottom falls, over less easily eroded rock, 78 feet. Oneonta Gorge hike has been closed to visitors since the 2017 Eagle Creek Fire. A narrow slot in the basalt carved by Oneonta Creek leads to the 70-foot-high Oneonta Falls. Abundant plants and wildflowers that thrive in the cool, moist microclimate have led the Forest Service to designate Oneonta Gorge a 'special botanical area.'

The scenic overlook off Highway 14 just east of Washougal, Washington, provides views of the Columbia River, Beacon Rock, and Phoca Rock. The trail is one section of the larger planned Gorge Towns to Trails Project that hopes to connect towns through the entire Columbia Gorge via walking trails.

In 1846, the governments of Britain and the United States signed the Oregon Treaty, establishing the 49th parallel as the border between their territories. Three years later, the U.S Army established the Vancouver Barracks, the Pacific Northwest’s first American military post. The post was located just uphill from the Hudson’s Bay Company’s Fort Vancouver, and when the HBC moved its headquarters to Victoria, British Columbia in 1860, the Army took over the Fort.
