Estuary Partnership sponsors pesticide disposal event

On June 20th the Estuary Partnership sponsored a free waste pesticide disposal event in Longview, WA, in partnership with the Washington Department of Agriculture (WSDA) and Cowlitz County Public Works. Funds were provided by the Columbia Riverkeeper.  The WSDA encouraged farms, businesses, and landowners to inspect their storage sheds, barns, shops and garages and dispose of any commercial and agricultural grade pesticides they no longer needed. The goal of the collection event was to make it easy to dispose of unused and unwanted pesticides before they may accidently spill or otherwise end up in the river. Preventing contaminants from ever getting into the Columbia River is part of the overall strategy to restoring the river’s health. Approximately 10,000 lbs. of pesticides were collected on June 20th! That’s a good day for the fish – and all of us!
