Downspout disconnection may be the simplest water quality friendly stormwater technique. It involves redirecting water from the stormwater system to individual yards by literally disconnecting the roof downspout and through a variety of means directing that water to nearby yard space. Here a short flexible extension and a splash block direct the water to a grassy area.

This house uses a long extension to provide distance from the house and direct the water to plants that need it. Downspout disconnection slows and reduces stormwater runoff from a site.
