Zmrhal/Rauth Coweeman Restoration

The project is upstream of a geologic pinch point that forms a mid channel bar with several side channel areas. The Coweeman River has eroded the existing narrow forested buffer exposing alluvial soils in agriculture land use and has about abandoned the side channel habitat. A project conducted during 2006 slowed streambank erosion downstream and continued abandonment of the side channel habitat.

Walters Stream Restoration

The Wahkiakum Conservation District will use this grant to restore 600 feet of the bank along Skamokawa Creek, which runs through a farm managed by Kay Walters. Work will include placing tree root wads, logs and logjams in the stream to help stabilize the bank and slow the stream, creating places for fish to rest, feed and hide from predators. Crews also will shape the bank, plant it and add a fence to separate the farm from the stream, improving water quality.

Lower Kalama Delta Habitat Complexing

Construct Engineered Log Jams on the Lower Kalama river delta at the Columbia River confluence to provide instream cover, complexity and holding; coldwater refuge for outmigrating juvenile salmonids and migrating adults; and to reduce predation by pinnepeds during low flow conditions. Investigate options for channel realignment. Project Site Acres = 5.

Lockwood Creek Phase 3

Work will include placing tree root wads and logs in the creek to create places for fish to rest, feed and hide from predators; creating off-channel rearing habitat; and planting the creek banks. The site, which is at the junction of Lockwood and Riley Creeks, contains nearly .4 mile of stream and covers 12 acres of floodplain habitat. The creek is home to Chinook, coho and steelhead, all listed under the federal Endangered Species Act.

Lewis River North Fork, RM 13.5

The project will create and enhance important spawning, rearing, and adult holding habitat for ESA-listed salmonids in the North Fork Lewis River. Connected side-channel habitat and LWD complexity have been reduced in this reach of the Lewis River due to past channel clean-outs, riparian clearing, hydro-regulation, and instream gravel mining. The project will enhance key habitat for ESA-listed salmonids through the construction of a 2,500 foot long side-channel with pool-riffle habitat, LWD placements, and connected off-channel (backwater) habitat.

Grays River LWD Habitat Complexing

The Lower Columbia Fish Enhancement Group will use this grant to place large, woody debris at two locations in the Grays River to improve fish habitat. The large woody debris will restore habitat complexity. The Grays River is home to coho, Chinook, chum and steelhead. This reach of the river is characterized by lack of pools where fish can rest, feed and grow and being too wide and shallow. The fish enhancement group will contribute $36,000 in donated labor.
